History
The Old Kerr Nursery Building

When the Albertina Kerr Nursery Home outgrew its original home in SW Portland a beautiful new building was built on NE 22nd between Glisan and Flanders.  Opening in 1921, the Nursery provided child care and adoption services until 1967 when state regulations forced its closure.  Albertina Kerr Centers ran a Day Care center until the building became too unsafe for children.

After three years of planning, fundraising and remodeling the building reopened in May of 1981 as The Old Kerr Nursery housing three volunteer-run businesses: Albertina's Restaurant, Kerr's Economy Jar and the Kerr Gift Shop.  The Kerr Thriftshop across the parking lot was soon added as was Albertina's Catering services.

The Nursery housed over 100 infants and children at any given time.  Now over 400 volunteers go in and out every month doing their part to make the businesses a continuing success.

Nursery staff is shown preparing meals circa 1921. Albertina's volunteer cooks prepare meals for 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM seatings in the remodeled kitchen.
